An extensive Grey’s Anatomy Season 5 Finale Commentary. So damn good.

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Warning: Grey’s Anatomy Season 5 Finale spoilers ahead. You DO NOT want to read this if you ever plan on watching this episode (and if you want to actually get the full benefit of watching).

greysanatomyseason5finaleI’ve been putting off watching the Season 5 finale of Grey’s Anatomy for quite some time now (mainly because I like to save TV I know will be good)…but I finally watched it and I have to say…what a great finale/cliffhanger. We pretty much knew that Izzy’s story was going to be a big part of the finale, but that twist they threw in there? The one they revealed with only about 5 or so minutes left? George?! Can I just say that even when Meredith screamed, “Oh God,” I still had no idea that John Doe was actually George. But when I re-watched (forced my friend to watch the episode), John Doe looked like George the whole time! Just so everyone is clear, a patient was brought into the hospital in critical condition after he jumped in front of a bus to save a girl. We didn’t know who it was until the episode was almost over.

George? Izzy? Both? So the cliffhanger left us with both George and Izzy’s lives at stake. They were both crashing and the episode ended with Izzy being charged one more time and Meredith saying, “It could all be gone tomorrow.” This whole crisis (trying to save Izzy in one room and George in another) also included a scene with Izzy getting onto an elevator (wearing the same “prom dress” she wore when Denny died at the end of Season 2). The elevator goes up and opens to George in a military uniform (looking quite dapper). Here’s what I think (and it may have been obvious): I think George is definitely going to die and that Izzy’s fate is still to be determined. George was off of the elevator and it seemed like Izzy was trying to decide whether she should get off too (metaphorically). I mean I hope that George doesn’t die, but from the rest of the episode, all the doctors (except Owen) made it seem like he was going to die at day’s end. I’m hoping they both live, but from the looks of it, I think only Izzy has a shot.

Izzy’s Hyper/hypo kalemia (not sure which): Okay so I may not be 100% right here, but right before Izzy went under, Christina kept saying Izzy’s kidneys are weak and that she has either hyperkalemia or hypokalemia. I actually tried figuring out if this was a condition Izzy could get past and it seems like there may be a chance! I don’t know the doctor words for it, but it’s something to do with low potassium level in the blood and possible kidney failure. We’ll see.

As for everyone else that is not George and Izzy: The whole Meredith and Christina exchange was just too cute. (M:”I love you Christina Yang.” C: “I’m going to give you a hug”). Meredith and Derek finally officially moving forward with their relationship (word to the wise: I don’t think we need anymore MerDer love drama anytime soon). The chief and Miranda’s playtime with the advanced surgery tools was lame (but Bailey was still cute). Christina finally let Owen in after his trauma-caused choking (C: “I can’t breathe without you.”). Bailey leaving her husband (because he gave her the altamatem of divorce or a time-consuming career in pediatrics)…Even though she dumped the loser (yay), it was still really sad to see her cry after realizing that she’s going to be a single mother. Bailey is also going to be sticking with General Surgery (aka more so-so moments with the Chief). As for Callie and Arizona…they didn’t have much in this episode (other than deciding if it was “awesome” that George enrolled into the military). As for Alex…I think people think he was being too angry and mean toward Izzy…but if I were in his shoes…I feel I’d act the same exact way. Anything he did was out of love for Izzy (A: She’s the only good thing in my life). BTW, how happy are some Grey’s fans that Izzy and Alex got so together again (regardless of what happens)? I am! :)

Departure rumors and the finale: So Katherine Heigl (Izzy) and T.R. Knight (George) have been rumored to be leaving the show, but the show’s writer has confirmed that both of them are under contract for another year. So basically, there’s a chance that either Izzy and/or George will live, it’s just a matter of whether or not Grey’s wants them to live.

Last thought/random Meredith thought: So a lot of people watch this show and they are like, “WTF is wrong with this Meredith chick?” I feel that some people just don’t understand her journey and why she was “dark and twisty” all this time. I think what people need to understand is this: Meredith is just someone who has been through a lot in her life (mother with Alzheimer’s and an affair, a neglectful father, and just trying to make it as a Doctor, something she worked so hard toward even with all the bullshit.) She’s a fighter and quite the inspirational TV show character. Some people just don’t see it. I do.

I love this show. And I really hope Season 6 delivers like Season 5 (I don’t care what anyone says, Season 5 was better than 3 and 4). The way Izzy’s illness came together (dead boyfriend hallucinations —> misdiagnosis –> stage 4 metastatic melanoma –> fighting the cancer –> ???) was brilliant.

The 100th episode of Grey’s Anatomy was indeed something special.

greysanatomy100thepisodeI don’t have a whole lot to say because this episode spoke for itself. So clearly Izzy is carrying the show into the finale. I’m HELLA nervous about this next episode. “It will change the way you watch Grey’s”? What exactly that does that mean? If Izzy dies… Grey’s Anatomy is going to have to work really hard to get me to keep watching. But anyway, back to this 100th episode. It was warm. It was giving. It was depressing. I was crying throughout the entire wedding scene (did anyone else totally think Izzy was going to pass out or something?). So what’s next for Izzy? Hopefully nothing bad. Don’t miss the finale this coming Thursday.

Can I also just say that I really think Season 5 of Grey’s Anatomy has been effing awesome. And it’s definitely better than seasons 3 and 4. Of course how they end Season 5 could change everything. That was a hint. Don’t kill Izzy. Thanks!

And lastly…“The best day of your life.” Definitely gave me something to think about.

Grey’s Anatomy…it’s not over until it’s over. Ahh!

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

I’m about to talk about this week’s Grey’s Anatomy. Spoilers ahead (only if you aren‘t caught up).

greysitsnotover13I put off watching Grey’s Anatomy this week for an entire day because I thought the episode was just going to kill me. Glad I finally watched it. Even though the episode was a lot more positive than I thought it would be, man, so much shit went down in this episode. First thing’s first, I’m surprised the episode was able to focus on anything but Izzy’s melastatic melanoma (Izzy’s stage 4 cancer). Like Christina and Owen…WTF. That scene where Christina was being choked was absolutely horrifying. While I’m looking forward to see that whole thing unfold, I’m glad that Christina [from what it seems] chose herself. Very twisty Grey’s moment. Derek and Meredith? I’m glad those two are moving forward and the elevator love letter was definitely cute. One thing though. Do the Grey’s writers think that putting Izzy as a notch in Derek/Meredith’s love story is an acceptable excuse for killing her? It is most absolutely not acceptable. You don’t get off that easy. Anything else happen worth noting? Lesbians dancing. George is upset (and to some extent I think we’d all be mad if our best friend didn’t tell us that they had cancer). Callie praying for Izzy to die? That caught me off guard…what a bitch. Speaking of bitches, that ecologist has got to go. While she’s just being detached, she doesn’t have to be one of those insensitive doctors (but it looks like Christina/Bailey are watch-dogging her..so that’s good..I was so happy when Bailey and Derek dissed the encologist during Izzy’s surgery…ZING).

greysitsnotover2Okay now to the more important stuff: Izzy. Alex. Izzy and Alex. Just sad. For anyone that thinks Izzy is cured, she’s not yet. The procedure she had (that Derek pulled off, which he definitely needed) was just one of many that Izzy needs. It also sounded like there’s more trouble ahead (the news that the ecologist gave Christina right before Izzy’s surgery with Derek). Every time I see Izzy on the screen, I wonder what the show would be like without her (and can’t). I am really glad that there’s some positivity in moving forward with treatment (who else thought Izzy was going to make the surgery when they showed Derek practicing? I did), but there’s so much more ahead. There are so many opportunities for something bad to happen. I really want the best, but with all the Katherine Heigl departure buzz, you have to prepare for the worst. Alex’s “it’s not supposed to happen like this” speech? Perfect. Love when this dude open’s up. The writers have been pretty selective about Alex’s sensitive side and this is definitely a good a time as any. It’s sad TV, but great TV at that. Actually. It’s really sad TV, but great. Does anyone else totally see Izzy babies in the future (whether Izzy is around or not)? WTF did no one visit Izzy while she just knitting away? What was that about? I got so nervous when none of them got to see Izzy go in before surgery. I just want to keep hearing great news about Izzy in the episodes to come. Stay positive. Regardless, it looks like season 5 of Grey’s Anatomy will be one to remember. Izzy love <3

So there is no new episode next week(s) (of course!) As soon as I know when the next episode is, you know I’ll post it. Can’t find the date anywhere (TVGuide, my Tivo, ABC, you name it). Stay tuned for that date. I know I will.

Basically this episode was amazing from beginning to end. The video below is a great re-cap of what went down:

Izzy/Grey’ Anatomy/Sadness

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Warning: I am about to talk about this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned.

izzygreysThis week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy was pretty damn revealing (and I loved it). As upset as Izzy’s storyline is making me, I am loving the way it is unfolding. In case you’re behind, Izzy has officially been diagnosed (after originally being misdiagnosed by an intern) with a fatal skin cancer (metastatic melanoma) that is quickly spreading to her brain. It also only has a 5% survival rate. It basically looks like Izzy (Katherine Heigl) is not going to make it past this season (aka another cast departure). I wish it wasn’t this way but maybe it’s best for the show. Or maybe Grey’s time is coming to an end… I mean how many original cast depatures can fans really put up with? 1. 2. 3rd time may not be the charm. I hope there’s hope for Izzy. It would be really interesting to see her fight this. I absolutely loved that Izzy chose to tell Christina, of all people, first. That ending scene in that generator-air-blowing room (what the hell is that room even called?) was beautiful. Loved it.

As for Derek and Meredith drama…although it’s definitely “been there done that” I am intrigued. Looks like the tables have turned and it’s Meredith’s time to fight for the relationship. Other tidbit comments: Callie’s lesbo storyline is kind of boring me. The chief is a little brat. Christina and the red head might be interesting. George is kind of useless lately. Bailey…blah. All eyes on Izzy.

I don’t think next week’s episode is new. How annoying. Keep me coming back for more Grey’s. Please.
