An extensive Grey’s Anatomy Season 5 Finale Commentary. So damn good.
Tuesday, June 9th, 2009Warning: Grey’s Anatomy Season 5 Finale spoilers ahead. You DO NOT want to read this if you ever plan on watching this episode (and if you want to actually get the full benefit of watching).
I’ve been putting off watching the Season 5 finale of Grey’s Anatomy for quite some time now (mainly because I like to save TV I know will be good)…but I finally watched it and I have to say…what a great finale/cliffhanger. We pretty much knew that Izzy’s story was going to be a big part of the finale, but that twist they threw in there? The one they revealed with only about 5 or so minutes left? George?! Can I just say that even when Meredith screamed, “Oh God,” I still had no idea that John Doe was actually George. But when I re-watched (forced my friend to watch the episode), John Doe looked like George the whole time! Just so everyone is clear, a patient was brought into the hospital in critical condition after he jumped in front of a bus to save a girl. We didn’t know who it was until the episode was almost over.
George? Izzy? Both? So the cliffhanger left us with both George and Izzy’s lives at stake. They were both crashing and the episode ended with Izzy being charged one more time and Meredith saying, “It could all be gone tomorrow.” This whole crisis (trying to save Izzy in one room and George in another) also included a scene with Izzy getting onto an elevator (wearing the same “prom dress” she wore when Denny died at the end of Season 2). The elevator goes up and opens to George in a military uniform (looking quite dapper). Here’s what I think (and it may have been obvious): I think George is definitely going to die and that Izzy’s fate is still to be determined. George was off of the elevator and it seemed like Izzy was trying to decide whether she should get off too (metaphorically). I mean I hope that George doesn’t die, but from the rest of the episode, all the doctors (except Owen) made it seem like he was going to die at day’s end. I’m hoping they both live, but from the looks of it, I think only Izzy has a shot.
Izzy’s Hyper/hypo kalemia (not sure which): Okay so I may not be 100% right here, but right before Izzy went under, Christina kept saying Izzy’s kidneys are weak and that she has either hyperkalemia or hypokalemia. I actually tried figuring out if this was a condition Izzy could get past and it seems like there may be a chance! I don’t know the doctor words for it, but it’s something to do with low potassium level in the blood and possible kidney failure. We’ll see.
As for everyone else that is not George and Izzy: The whole Meredith and Christina exchange was just too cute. (M:”I love you Christina Yang.” C: “I’m going to give you a hug”). Meredith and Derek finally officially moving forward with their relationship (word to the wise: I don’t think we need anymore MerDer love drama anytime soon). The chief and Miranda’s playtime with the advanced surgery tools was lame (but Bailey was still cute). Christina finally let Owen in after his trauma-caused choking (C: “I can’t breathe without you.”). Bailey leaving her husband (because he gave her the altamatem of divorce or a time-consuming career in pediatrics)…Even though she dumped the loser (yay), it was still really sad to see her cry after realizing that she’s going to be a single mother. Bailey is also going to be sticking with General Surgery (aka more so-so moments with the Chief). As for Callie and Arizona…they didn’t have much in this episode (other than deciding if it was “awesome” that George enrolled into the military). As for Alex…I think people think he was being too angry and mean toward Izzy…but if I were in his shoes…I feel I’d act the same exact way. Anything he did was out of love for Izzy (A: She’s the only good thing in my life). BTW, how happy are some Grey’s fans that Izzy and Alex got so together again (regardless of what happens)? I am!
Departure rumors and the finale: So Katherine Heigl (Izzy) and T.R. Knight (George) have been rumored to be leaving the show, but the show’s writer has confirmed that both of them are under contract for another year. So basically, there’s a chance that either Izzy and/or George will live, it’s just a matter of whether or not Grey’s wants them to live.
Last thought/random Meredith thought: So a lot of people watch this show and they are like, “WTF is wrong with this Meredith chick?” I feel that some people just don’t understand her journey and why she was “dark and twisty” all this time. I think what people need to understand is this: Meredith is just someone who has been through a lot in her life (mother with Alzheimer’s and an affair, a neglectful father, and just trying to make it as a Doctor, something she worked so hard toward even with all the bullshit.) She’s a fighter and quite the inspirational TV show character. Some people just don’t see it. I do.
I love this show. And I really hope Season 6 delivers like Season 5 (I don’t care what anyone says, Season 5 was better than 3 and 4). The way Izzy’s illness came together (dead boyfriend hallucinations —> misdiagnosis –> stage 4 metastatic melanoma –> fighting the cancer –> ???) was brilliant.
